How important are backups? Just ask Ma.gnolia

We talk about backups frequently. We have dealt with backup failure internally as a company and with our customers, both individuals and businesses.

We talk about backups frequently. We have dealt with backup failure internally as a company and with our customers, both individuals and businesses.

In recent weeks there has been an example of backup failure on a large scale. Ma.gnolia.com, a link sharing community, lost all of their data. This included all the links that users had saved. Now, for many of us this data may not be so vital we can’t live without it. (I had a few links stored on their site when I was testing various link sharing sites.) But for some, this is a difficult pill to swallow.

Most difficult for the staff at Ma.gnolia is the task of trying to recover data at the same time as trying to comfort customers. Their whole business model was blown in a matter of seconds.

Here is an excerpt from their front page:

Early on the West-coast morning of Friday, January 30th, Ma.gnolia experienced every web service’s worst nightmare: data corruption and loss. For Ma.gnolia, this means that the service is offline and members’ bookmarks are unavailable, both through the website itself and the API. As I evaluate recovery options, I can’t provide a certain timeline or prognosis as to to when or to what degree Ma.gnolia or your bookmarks will return; only that this process will take days, not hours.

It will be interesting to follow the story. It is an unfortunate incident. Yet it does help bring to the forefront the importance of backups for a company.
