Aspiring Mac Geekery — Helping Hints
Here are some helpful hints for Mac OS X users that are bound to make your inner geek feel a whole lot better and perhaps make you a tech hero around the office cocktail party.
Dismount for a smoother landing: Before you pack up your notebook, be it MacBook, iBook, or PowerBook, first unmount any servers to which you’re connected. Otherwise, the next time you pop open your notebook, you’ll wait in beach-ball purgatory while the Mac looks for the server that it thinks it is still connected with on the previous network. Your Mac will stubbornly look for the server volume(s) for at least a full minute!
Know Thy Limitations: It’s not just your imagination; Mac OS X’s built-in FTP support really can be flakey. Nah, it simply SUCKS, as in it does NOT WORK!. So use CyberDuck instead, which is free and as robust and reliable as the rising sun. And everyone loves the rubber duckie in the dock!
